SHEUNG-SHUN "RAX" WAN
Frank Gehry
For every one of my projects up until now, I have been working in what they so-called, INTUITIVELY, which is a very subjective outlook towards one's architecture. "I think it looks better if I do this" or "No, No, No, it should be like this." This way of operating has been etched into the way I do thinks about architecture as well as things outside of architecture. During this architecture endeavor of mine, I came across the iconic works of Frank Gehry and took a deep dive into his background, philosophies, attitude towards architecture. After learning about his work and style, it sparked an epiphany within me, that this is truly the direction of architecture that I want to pursue.
The style of architecture that Frank Gehry adopts is called Deconstructivism, which challenges a new style of architecture which breaks away from the norms and conventional means. In most of Gehry's work, the style of deconstructivism is expressed in the forms of fragmentation, manipulating the skin surface and deploying
non-rectilinear geometries. Amidst the the seemingly clash of geometries that Gehry produced, the finished product is often characterized by "unpredictability" and "controlled chaos." In my opinion, this form of freedom and personality in building design or "sculpture" is truly what I'm yearning for in the course of my career. One of my career goal is to design a building that will act as my signature on this world. This building will be the proof that I existed and it must imprint a striking impression to anyone who've seem this work of art. To achieve this impression onto experts and even a layman in the field, the architecture must really stand out against most, and unconventional and unpredictable means is indispensable. Combining this principle as well as harmonizing it with attributes of sustainability (as mentioned in my bio) will truly be the fruit that completes my goal in life.
"I don't want to do architecture that is dry and dull"
"If I knew where I was going, I wouldn't do it. If I can predict it or plan it, I don't do it"
- Frank Gehry
